The Chasm is a popular destination for visitors traveling to Milford Sound, with visitation levels nearing one million per year. Pre-2020 flood, this popular experience consisted of a loop track featuring two gallery bridges, providing beautiful views of waterfalls in the Chasm and the Cleddau river below.
The Chasm sustained significant damage during the February 2020 extreme weather event. The upper bridge over the cascade was entirely washed away, the lower bridge was damaged, the carpark was covered with debris, and the Cleddau River shifted its course closer to the north-east edge of the carpark.
After Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, the Programme engaged a Consultant to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study on The Chasm to ensure resilience of any future structures. Scope for this work included a comprehensive hydrology risk assessment and geotechnical risk assessment.
The purpose of this procurement is to source a construction contractor to deliver the following scope of works:
1) Removal and appropriate disposal of the existing Lower Chasm bridge, and
2) Supply and construction of a new Lower Chasm bridge (as per approved design and specifications), and
3) Supply and construction of a new TL Upper Chasm platform (as per approved design and specifications), and
4) Track work on TL (construction of new section of a track and upgrade of existing track as per supplied track
specification), and
5) Removal of existing concrete viewing platform on TR, removal of concrete from site, replanting of site, and
6) Track work on TR (removal of existing section of track as per supplied track specification)
7) All associated establishment, disestablishment, and other works necessary to complete all above items (to the
agreed design and specification)
