The Department of Conservation, led by the Director-General, invites ROI submissions from contractors with the proven capability, experience, and capacity to undertake construction works for Phase Two of the Rākau Rangatira Project, delivered in partnership with Te Iwi O Te Roroa.
The project is aimed at safeguarding the ecological health of Waipoua Forest from the impacts of tourism at iconic sites such as Tāne Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere, the Four Sisters, and other kauri giants. Construction services are required for the safe renewal of visitor infrastructure at Kauri Walks. The scope includes demolishing and replacing boardwalks and viewing platforms at Te Matua Ngahere and the Four Sisters. A new fit-for-purpose boardwalk will be constructed on a new alignment to remove all on ground tracks, which will mitigate the risk of spreading Phytophthora Agathidicida, also referred to as kauri dieback, and enhance visitor experience.
The new elevated boardwalk will be constructed on a new alignment requiring a supplier experienced in navigating and delivering low impact construction in sensitive environments. Works will need to be delivered in accordance with an approved Earthworks Risk Management Plan in line with the Kauri Dieback National Pest Management Plan. The preferred contractor will have prior experience in constructing high-quality, world class visitor infrastructure in remote areas, using light weight machinery to minimise environmental damage, and helicopter operations including underslung loads.
The selected contractor will be accountable for delivering the entire scope of work, including the engagement and oversight of any required sub-contractors. This Registration of Interest (ROI) aims to evaluate the capability and suitability of potential suppliers to deliver the required services. Interested suppliers are invited to submit a response to this ROI, which may be used by the Department to create a shortlist for a subsequent Request for Proposal process.
Participants can visit the Kauri Walks site at their own leisure during opening hours, but it is very important to note that no one is allowed to leave the boardwalk, viewing platforms, or gravel tracks under any circumstances. Please note the Four Sisters are closed to the public due to the presence of PA (kauri dieback). A controlled site visit shall be organised as part of the RFP stage.
